Our District:

The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12.  Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.

 Our Community:

Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Our “backyard” is the scenic Skykomish River and Cascade Mountains.  Sultan School District includes the community of Sultan, Startup, and Gold Bar.  Students from Index attend Sultan High School.

Essential Job Functions: 

This position’s responsibilities are, under general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor, to organize and conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training and refresher training for District bus drivers; to maintain current knowledge of driving, training and safety requirements; to perform duties of a bus driver related to special assigned schedules and to do related work as required.

  • Instructs and assists bus drivers in the performance of their duties.
  • Supervises vehicle operation of drivers.
  • Evaluates driver knowledge and skills and performance standards related to efficiency, safety and legality.
  • Prepares and maintains current and legal training progress reports.
  • Coordinates training activities with Dispatcher to insure maximum efficiency of transportation service.
  • May investigate special problems related to bus stops, loadings, etc.
  • Conducts road tests and orientation to new vehicles.
  • Performs standard bus driving duties related to special assigned schedules.
  • Assists in routine departmental functions, as requested.
  • Implements student passenger safety regulations and procedures.
  • Investigates all accidents.
  • Monitors performance of evacuation exercises biannually each school year.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Knowledge of:

  • State and local traffic laws and regulations
  • Geographical conditions of the District.
  • Safe driving practices and procedures.
  • Methods used in training bus drivers.
  • Washington Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code requirements pertaining to pupil transportation.

Ability to:

  • Schedule and conduct effective classroom and behind-the-wheel training programs for bus drivers.
  • Safely operate a school bus.
  • Supervise and motivate bus drivers.
  • Maintain accurate records and prepare correct reports.
  • Deal effectively with the public and District personnel.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, FORMAL TRAINING:

  • Two years of experience as a school bus driver.
  • Two years of experience as a driver trainer.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a valid Washington Driver's License with a Commercial Driver’s License Passenger endorsement.
  • School Bus Driver Authorization, issued by the Office of School Public Instruction (OSPI).
  • Possession of a valid School Bus Driver Instructor's Certificate Issued by Pupil Transportation / OSPI.
  • Valid first aid card.

Immigration Reform and Control Act Requirement:

The recommended applicant, if not a current  employee, will be required to complete an INS I-9 form and must provide proof of  employment eligibility.

Disclosure Statement and Background Check

Pursuant to Chapter 43.43, Washington Laws of 1990, the recommended applicant will be required to complete a disclosure form indicating whether he/she has been convicted of crimes against persons listed in the law.  In addition, a background check, based on fingerprints, will be requested from the  Washington State Patrol.
