NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION:

The Truancy Liaison, under the direction of the Assistant Principal at Sultan High School, identifies and supports students who are at risk of dropping out of school or who have already dropped out of school. The Truancy Liaison may reach out to students and their parents or guardians. The position develops and coordinates the district’s truancy board and works with buildings to coordinate the BECCA/Truancy process, including service as the District’s BECCA/Truancy liaison with the Snohomish County court system.

 

OUR DISTRICT:

The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12.  Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.

 

OUR COMMUNITY:

Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Our “backyard” is the scenic Skykomish River and Cascade Mountains.  Sultan School District includes the community of Sultan, Startup, and Gold Bar.  Students from Index attend Sultan High School.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

Depending upon the individual assignment, the Truancy Liaison performs all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Work collaboratively with counselors, school staff, truancy board and community agencies to identify those students at risk of school failure or those students that are no longer attending school, including those students with active BECCA petitions
  • Conduct the Washington Assessment of the Risks and Needs of Students (WARNS) for students identified and refer to the appropriate district specialists based upon the results of the assessment
  • Work effectively with targeted youth and their parents/guardians in an effort to return the student to the Sultan School District in an appropriate secondary education program or to another educational program that meets their identified needs
  • Keep accurate database on targeted youth and families served, returned to school or enrolled in other appropriate educational programs
  • Maintain accurate OSPI required data related to student attendance and truancy (annual truancy report)
  • Work closely with students, families, truancy board and schools with all aspects of the BECCA process, including service as the District’s liaison to the Snohomish County court
  • Represent the District in a professional manner in the legal process as it relates to BECCA including formal court hearings
  • Maintain work schedule including arriving on time for work and appointments
  • Facilitate small group meetings with parents and students to explain the legal requirements of BECCA and student/parent responsibilities
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
  • Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, fights, substance abuse,
  • Adhere to federal, state and district regulations, policies and practices
  • Abide by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
  • Operates a computer and a variety of software packages such as word processing, spreadsheet, database, desk top publishing, and mainframe computer applications. Provides a variety of routine and custom reports as requested.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides a variety of building services to create a positive office environment.
  • Serves as member of the office support team.
  • Performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

MENTAL DEMANDS:

  • Experiences constant interruptions.
  • Required to deal with distraught or angry parents and the public, frequently required to meet inflexible deadlines.
  • Required to adapt to shifting priorities and to frequently re-channel work efforts.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Exposed to visual display terminal for prolonged periods.
  • Dexterity and precision required in the operation of a computer.
  • Occasional to frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and seeing.
  • Frequently expected to lift objects weighing up to 10 pounds and occasionally required to lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds.

  • Ability to communicate and interact effectively with students, staff and the public.
  • Familiar with counseling and support services available to students and families and with the role and functions of a guidance counselor
  • Ability to provide quality customer service.
  • Knowledge of office and clerical procedures.

  • Ability to operate a variety of office machines.
  • Ability to operate a computer and learn the operation of specific software programs.
  • Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling and English usage.

  • Ability to model positive and effective behavior.

EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, FORMAL TRAINING:

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license
  • Ability to drive an automobile or van
  • Successful WA State background check

Immigration Reform and Control Act Requirement:

The recommended applicant, if not a current employee, will be required to complete an INS I-9 form and must provide proof of employment eligibility.

 

Disclosure Statement and Background Check:

Pursuant to Chapter 43.43, Washington Laws of 1990, the recommended applicant will be required to complete a disclosure form indicating whether he/she has been convicted of crimes against persons listed in the law.  In addition, a background check, based on fingerprints, will be requested from the Washington State Patrol.
