OUR DISTRICT:
The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12. Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.
OUR COMMUNITY:
Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Our “backyard” is the scenic Skykomish River and Cascade Mountains. Sultan School District includes the community of Sultan, Startup, and Gold Bar. Students from Index attend Sultan High School.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Prepares breakfast and lunch meals for students and staff to provide nutrition for educational achievement; prepares and cooks hot dishes, sandwiches, salads, snacks and ala carte items; grates cheese, makes dressings and sauces and other food preparation tasks.
- Follows correct procedures for the preparation, cooking, holding and storage of food to ensure sanitation and safety.
- May order supplies such as, fruit, vegetables, baked products, meat, paper products, utensils and other items needed for menus; assesses quantity needs; receives and checks orders.
- Cleans and washes kitchen utensils, equipment, pots and pans and food preparation surfaces to ensure sanitation and safety.
- Maintains kitchen safety and security by checking that appliances and lights are off after use, by locking cash box and refrigerator and securing area.
- Supervises student helpers as needed; provides guidance, training and instruction in proper food handling, serving and sanitation; monitors and corrects student behavior.
- Correctly lift up to 35 pounds in various containers (i.e. heavy mixing bowls, cases of food, large pans of unbaked and baked food, cases of canned and fresh vegetable and fruit)
- Record of dependability, flexibility, strong attendance. Must also maintain punctuality and regular attendance.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- May take orders for ala carte items from other schools.
- May transport baked goods and deliver food supplies to various school sites.
- May maintain records for free, reduced and paid meal tickets and cash purchases; counts and deposits money.
- May serve as cashier; makes change, counts money and prepares deposits.
- May serve food; serves appropriate quantities and presents food attractively.
- Serves as member of food services team of the district, performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
- Performs under strict meal deadlines.
- Required to time multiple tasks for completion in proper sequence.
- Required to anticipate quantities and order for cost-efficiency and proper storage.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Exposed to heat from ovens, burners and steam trays.
- Exposed to cutting and slicing equipment and machines with moving parts.
- Required to stand for prolonged periods.
- Required to move heavy supplies and full pans of food.
- Required to correctly lift heavy objects up to 35 pounds
- Exposed to high noise levels from kitchen equipment and students at meals.
- Required to wear protective clothing.
- If assigned to transport food, exposed to traffic conditions and inclement weather.
POSITION MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to communicate effectively with others.
- Ability to follow menus and recipes.
- Skill in cooking, preparing and presenting nutritious and attractive meals.
- Knowledge in proper food handling techniques.
- Knowledge in food service safety and sanitation.
- Knowledge in nutrition.
- Skill in maintaining accurate records.

- Ability to order and account for food service items.
- Ability to supervise other food service staff.
- Ability to supervise student behavior.
- Ability to correctly lift heavy objects up to 35 pounds
- Ability to maintain punctuality and regular attendance.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and positive working relationships with students, staff and vendors.
EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION, FORMAL TRAINING:
- High school graduation or equivalent and one year of experience in commercial/institutional food preparation.
- Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis; advanced training in food service may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Valid Washington State Food Handler’s Permit.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License.

Disclosure Statement and Background Check:
Pursuant to Chapter 43.43, Washington Laws of 1990, the recommended applicant will be required to complete a disclosure form indicating whether he/she has been convicted of crimes against persons listed in the law. In addition, a background check, based on fingerprints, will be requested from the Washington State Patrol.
